Denny's Challenge 5K Run/Walk - A Miles for Melanoma Race

Jul 14, 2012

The third annual Denny’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk – A Miles for Melanoma Race returns to the Wake Med Soccer Park in Cary on July 14, 2012.  The race starts at 8AM that morning (rain or shine), with on-site registration and chip-timing packet pick-up beginning at 7AM.

The annual event started in July, 2010, and draws a diverse range of participants to the cross-country course at the Wake Med Soccer Park – from the experienced running enthusiast to the recreational beginner, and to family members of all ages.  As part of the Melanoma Research Foundation’s Miles for Melanoma program, it has already raised over $12,000 in its first two years on behalf of melanoma research.  It has quickly become one of the larger recreational fundraising events for the Melanoma Research Foundation in the Carolinas.

This event will once again be a USATF sanctioned race; race packets will be provided with early pick-up available on Friday, July 13, 2012, at a location to be announced at a later date to all registrants.  On-site registration & packet pick-up begins on race day at 7AM on July 14, 2012, at the Wake Med Soccer Park.

Ample parking is available at the race site, and planned attendance of returning sponsors is expected.  In addition to the 5K Run/Walk, there is also a 100-yard fun run for kids.

This race which began in July of 2010, was started to honor the last wishes of Denny Neely before he succumbed to melanoma.  A man of wit & humor in his last hour, he challenge his family to a fifty mile race.  This time he wasn’t joking – he was serious. To accept his challenge and to help further melanoma research, Denny’s Challenge continues to grow as it offers 16 medals to the top 16 finishers each year.  The 16 medals represent the 50-mile total Denny noted. Medals will also be awarded to age-group winners for this year's race.

The founders of the race continue to be amazed how a dying wish has now evolved into a fun recreational event in the Triangle area of North Carolina, and to see its popularity grow.

Come join us in furthering melanoma research, honor those who have gone before us, and enjoy a fun event with a diverse range of participants.  You will be glad you did.
