Tee-Off For The Troops Golf Classic

Oct 2, 2012 12:00pm - 1:00pm

The annual Tee-Off for the Troops Golf Classic, held in recognition of Veterans Day, November 11th, has a twofold goal — to recognize and honor our veterans on “their day,” and to raise funds that enable Military Missions in Action (MMIA) to provide its services and support. Participants of the Tee-Off for the Troops Golf Classic gather each year in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, at Bentwinds Golf and Country Club in anticipation of a fun day of golf, but they also meet to pay tribute to our veterans. All those involved in the event share an awareness of the many sacrifices our veterans make protecting our freedom and serving our country.

Tournament day begins with a opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m. honoring our veterans that includes the singing of the National Anthem, a Military Color Guard presentation, a 21-gun salute from a Rifle Team, bagpiper music, and a Wreath Laying ceremony on a fallen soldier memorial. In the past, guest speakers at the ceremony have included many distinguished military officials (including the first female General in the NC National Guard). Other notable guests have included Silver Star medal recipients from World War II and current conflicts, Miss North Carolina and national boxing professionals.
At the conclusion of the opening ceremony, the tournament kicks-off at 11:00 am. The date and time of the tournament is significant in that it is the nationally recognized anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I—the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Players end the day in the clubhouse where the presentation of tournament awards takes place over a buffet dinner and silent auction.

Tournament participants include wounded warriors, active and retired veterans, and non-military players . Participants of MMIA’s Operation Warrior Golf program, in which wounded warriors are taught to overcome their limitations through the game of golf, also attend and play.

In just three years, the Tee-Off for the Troops Golf Classic has grown from a one-day tournament drawing 118 participants and raising $8,000 to a two-day tournament drawing 240 players, raising $15,000 and becoming Bentwinds’ premier tournament. The proceeds raised from the golf tournament enable Military Missions in Action to complete it’s projects and programs that support veterans with disabilities as well as active-duty servicemen and women. Your company can play an important role in helping Military Missions in Action accomplish its vision of setting the standard of support for our veterans with disabilities and members of the Armed Forces.
